Spring is in full swing, and at times it’s already felt like summertime. Of course, with spring comes spring cleaning. Not the rest of the house (for me, at least) but every spring I begin to go through my magic collection, looking for old gems that have been previously overlooked.
Every time I pick up a book that I haven’t looked at in a few years, I’m amazed to discover a routine that I initially overlooked. As we progress in magic, our goals change, our outlook changes, and our tastes change. This means that a trick you passed over previously may now be just what you’re looking for. Dust off a book you haven’t read in a while, you may be surprised by what you find.
Also, don’t forget about the beginner’s books. That’s right, those books that we acquired in our early days and have quickly moved beyond. There filled with simple, direct effects. While the methods may be primitive, you may be surprised that you can tweak or modify the method (using your knowledge obtained since first reading the book) and turn this beginner’s trick into something much, much more. As well, you may be surprised to discover in these books methods and effects which are being re-packaged and sold as new.
Next time you drop by the shop, I’d love to see what you found during your ‘Spring Cleaning’.
Jeff
